To Build Bridges

One of the values of the Fulbright program is to build bridges. Bridges of understanding among cultures, among nations, among people. I love the metaphor of a bridge as something that can connect two distant points, two distant and different realities.

In March, 2014, I had the privilege to assist to the Fulbright Enrichment Seminar on “Civic Engagement: Education and Youth Empowerment” in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (U.S.A.). By far, this was an incredible experience in which I had the opportunity not only to share with other Fulbrighters, but to visit the city of Pittsburg, to know extraordinary people working in the improvement of their communities in the Pittsburgh area. For me, it was important to realize that beyond nations, language and culture we all share the same goals and values and have the same concerns about our daily lives. It could sound trivial but it is a powerful learning lesson when you learn it immersed in a community of international students. I personally want to express my gratitude to the Fulbright Commission and the City of Pittsburgh for this unforgettable seminar, for this beautiful opportunity for learning.
